Google Business Profile Measurement Stack: From UTM Click to Qualified Lead
A Google Business Profile report can tell you that people clicked, called, or requested directions. It cannot tell you which actions became qualified work unless the website, phone workflow, and lead record carry the same source. This playbook builds that chain without pretending the numbers will match one-to-one.
Deliverable: one naming standard, one location-specific landing page, one monthly reconciliation sheet, and a clear owner for every break in the chain.

Start with three different measurement views
Business Profile performance reports searches, views, direction requests, calls, website clicks, bookings, and other interactions available to a verified profile. Google defines calls as clicks on the call button, not completed or qualified conversations. Website analytics begins after a landing page loads and consent permits measurement. The sales record begins only when a person submits, books, calls, or is entered by staff.
These systems answer different questions. Do not force them into a single “local SEO conversion rate” before deciding what each count represents.
| System | Question answered | Common blind spot |
|---|---|---|
| Business Profile | What did people do on Search or Maps? | Call clicks are not completed calls; some actions never visit the site. |
| GA4 | What happened after a tagged website visit? | Consent, blockers, redirects, and cross-domain booking can remove context. |
| CRM or lead sheet | Which enquiries were qualified, quoted, or won? | Staff may overwrite source with “Google” or leave it blank. |
Build one UTM convention before adding links
Google Analytics recommends consistent, case-sensitive campaign values. A practical convention for a multi-location business is:
utm_source=google
utm_medium=organic
utm_campaign=gbp
utm_content=vancouver-website
Use utm_content for the location and action, such as burnaby-booking or richmond-menu. Keep the same vocabulary across all locations. Avoid variants such as Google, google_maps, and GMB; they split reporting rows without adding meaning.

Generate the tagged URL, open it in a private window, and watch the address bar through every redirect. If WordPress, a booking platform, or a language redirect strips the query string, GA4 never receives the campaign. For Business Profile action links, Google also requires a dedicated working page that automated crawlers can load without login, CAPTCHA, geo-blocking, or a non-200 response.
Give each real location a useful landing page
Do not send every profile to the homepage when customers need location-specific hours, access, booking, or service boundaries. A dedicated page should show the same business name and location reality as the profile, then provide:
- the action promised by the link near the top of the page;
- address or service-area details, parking or transit notes, and current hours;
- a click-to-call number and a form or booking route that preserves campaign context;
- visible proof such as location photos, staff, service examples, and a last-reviewed date;
- a privacy-safe explanation of what happens after submission.

Capture leads without inventing attribution
Forms should store the landing-page URL and UTM fields in hidden inputs. A booking system should return campaign data through its confirmation page, integration, or webhook. Phone leads need a defined method: a dynamic call-tracking number with a stable primary business number, a receptionist question, or a call log linked to the landing page. Each method has trade-offs, so document which sources are observed and which are self-reported.
Do not record a precise campaign when evidence only supports “Google.” False precision makes a dashboard look tidy while teaching the team nothing.

Use a monthly reconciliation sheet
Create one row per location and month. Record profile calls, directions, website clicks, tagged GA4 sessions, form starts, submissions, bookings, qualified leads, quotes, and wins. Add notes for profile edits, outages, consent changes, and campaign migrations. Ratios are diagnostic, not universal benchmarks.
| Ratio | What a sudden change may mean | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Tagged sessions / profile website clicks | Redirect loss, consent change, browser blocking, or date/time mismatch | Run the tagged URL and inspect GA4 Realtime or DebugView. |
| Submissions / tagged sessions | Offer, page, form, traffic quality, or tracking issue | Submit a test lead and confirm source fields. |
| Qualified leads / submissions | Targeting, service-area, pricing, or lead-handling change | Read the actual enquiries; do not diagnose from a chart alone. |

A 30-minute monthly QA routine
- Open each profile link in a private browser and confirm a 200 response.
- Verify the final URL still contains the intended UTM values.
- Complete one form, call, or booking test per location.
- Confirm the test appears in GA4 and the lead system with the same source.
- Annotate material profile, website, consent, or staffing changes.
- Review lost leads by reason before increasing traffic spend.
Reviews belong in the operating system, not the attribution model
Google lets businesses create a review link or QR code for receipts, thank-you emails, chats, and in-store display. Ask after a genuine experience and never offer incentives; Google classifies incentivized reviews as fake engagement. Track whether the request was sent and whether the customer issue was resolved. Do not try to identify individual reviewers through analytics.
Frequently asked questions
Why are GA4 sessions lower than Business Profile website clicks?
A profile click occurs before the page and analytics load. Consent, blockers, network failure, redirects, duplicate clicks, and different reporting windows can all create a gap.
Should the medium be organic, referral, or local?
Choose one documented convention that supports your reporting model. organic keeps the visit with unpaid Google activity; a custom medium such as local creates a separate channel that needs configuration. Consistency matters more than copying another company’s labels.
Can this prove that local SEO caused a sale?
It can produce a defensible path for observed interactions and leads. It cannot recover untracked calls, cross-device journeys, offline word of mouth, or every privacy-limited visit. Report the known path and its gaps.
