From Expert Interview to Discovery System: Podcast, Long Video, and Short Clips

Professional interview production creating podcast and video content

Do not begin an interview by deciding how many clips to cut. Begin with the idea the audience should understand by the end. Short media creates a first encounter; a long video or podcast carries the method and reasoning; a service page, case, or email supports the next decision. Without all three, attention often stops at a view count.

Canadian behaviour supports a layered format

The CRTC’s 2023–2024 broadcasting highlights reports that 36% of Canadian adults listened to a podcast in a given week in 2024, rising to 49% among ages 18–34 and 44% among ages 35–49. The same report says streaming-only households increased from 23% in 2023 to 29% in 2024. That does not mean every brand needs a podcast. It shows that on-demand expert content has a mature listening context.

One point of view, three content layers

Layer Job Format Measure
Discovery Earn attention from the right person 20–60 second clip or visual excerpt Qualified views, shares, profile visits
Understanding Carry reasoning, examples, and limits 8–30 minute video or podcast Completion, chapter use, return visits
Evaluation Answer fit, price, and next step Service page, case, FAQ, email Qualified enquiries and revenue influence

A 2026 CRTC-commissioned discoverability study notes that social media can spark discovery without reliably creating durable fandom; multiple entry points and ongoing community relationships matter. A short clip is therefore a doorway to an argument, not merely a smaller version of the long edit.

Do the editorial interview before recording

Questions should force useful judgment: which industry habit do you disagree with? When does your advice fail? Which recent decision changed an outcome? Which numbers can be published, and which can only be described as a range? These prompts produce more quotable and human material than “tell us about the company.”

Finish one coherent long version first, then cut on idea boundaries. Preserve enough context for each clip and link it to the most relevant full resource. For the opening structure, use our three-second hook framework.

Frequently asked questions

Can a company make a podcast without a permanent host?

Yes. Start with a quarterly theme or limited series. Consistency of audience and question matters more than forcing a weekly personality-led show.

Does a podcast have to be audio-only?

No. Recording video can support YouTube and short clips, but audio quality and verbal context must still serve someone who never sees the screen.

How many clips should one episode produce?

There is no target number. Keep only segments that stand on their own, help a specific audience, and lead somewhere useful. Do not fragment every sentence to fill a calendar.

Sources and scope

Listening and streaming figures come from the CRTC’s 2025 report on the 2023–2024 broadcast year. The discovery model also draws on a 2026 CRTC-commissioned study written by Nordicity. National figures should be tested against the brand’s audience data.
